Thanks LynallDiscovery , that’s kind of reassuring to hear.

I had my 58 plate 3.0TDI MOT'd a couple of weeks ago - no problems.

I was speaking to a guy who works at the local Bosch garage he said he'd only heard of one car that had fallen fault of the new regulations. He said to be absolutely certain just ensure the engine is nice and warm when it goes in for testing.

Not what I've been hearing in general , plenty of cars not making the lower default or vin value , and because of this some are finding they've a gutted dpf .

Engine has to be hot and in good order , anything that can cause the enrichment of fueling... thermostat , maf , boost leaks , dirty air filter etc .

Mine would of failed at it's usual test mean of 1.00 if it weren't for a new thermostat to get under 0.60 .

Thanks Biglads , I will remember to make sure the engine is warm. A couple of years back I was told that a VCDS diagnosis had reported a couple of glow plugs failing . I asked about worst case scenario if I don’t replace them and they said it could mean on a cold morning that the car won’t start. I never had them replaced or any problem like that . But I s this something that could potentially impact on the emissions test ?

The other thing is the car can go virtually unused for months at a time. I will check the tyre pressures and oil level, make sure the engine is warm. Is there anything else anyone would advise doing please ?

I tend to use it for long distance motorway driving which is pretty infrequent these days . I’d need to check how quickly the temp gets up.

    Hi,

Mine used to smoke like a chieftain tank... white smoke... sickly sweet over-fueling.

I sent my injectors up to Diesel Bob in Lancashire - it turned out all six of them were leaking! (my car has covered 145k). Following replacement... she doesn't smoke at all; which is very reassuring considering the tighter MOT rules!

The garage advised me to get rid of the car rather than doing the injectors (£1,500 including extraction & replacement) but I'm pleased I kept her... yes, she's starting to have more problems as the years go on but better the devil you know etc!

You could paint over the manufacture vin limit or scratch it off and there's nothing an mot test centre can do about it. If they cannot see it they have to apply the 2.50 default limit.

I’m happy to report , as the OP , that it passed the MOT today (at a Halfords Autocentre).

I had both rear coil springs replaced in July last year. On the MOT today , they gave an amber advisory to renew both rear shock absorbers which they said had “light misting of oil”.

Sorry for my ignorance , but can anyone explain what the difference is between a coil spring and a shock absorber, please ?
