I am in the process of replacing a front wheel bearing on my 1998 A4 1.8T. The kit I got with the new wheel bearing has two circlips in it. The wheel bearing I've removed from the car didn't appear to have any circlips fitted, however, there is a groove at the rear of the hub that looks like it would take one. Any help would be much appreciated - I asked at my local Audi parts desk and got nowhere! I don't want to leave it out if it's needed (not that I can see what good it would do at the back of the hub - there's nowhere for the bearing to go), nor do I want to fit one and find the bearing won't go far enough in...

Some setups have two circlip positions but yours will be one machined face that you push the bearing down onto and then a circlip you fit behind but to me you must always have a retention system both sides. The reason you have two clips is that bearing will have all sorts of applications, even as a washing machine drum bearing
