    Hi all,

I have a 64 reg A6 S line and the Nav runs form the SD card, however I wondered is it as simple as me buying an updated SD card and it will run the new maps or is it more complicated than that? I called Audi but they want £250 plus to do this... is there an easier way?

The only legal way to do this is to get the dealer to do it as the SD Card will need pairing with the car

Only that there are people who claim to be able to do it and some on here have discussed it but I have no experience of it so cannot pass any comment as to the experience or success of the outcome

The risk in saving a couple of hundred quid is bricking your satnav unit which will be a grand at least to replace.
If you shop around the different dealers they do sell them for less. My colleague got theirs updated from a dealer for £150 and that includes a mmi updated as some newer maps don’t work with older firmware’s.

I bought a 2014 A6 and the garage had lost the sd card

Anyway I kicked off so they bought me a new card and arranged for it programming. Think it was £225 for the card and another £100!to pair it to the car. Can’t remember exactly but it was Harrogate Audi

Anyway I was suited. My car is 2014 and they paid for the latest map which is 2018, that’s where my happiness ends. Supposed to be latest maps yet doesn’t recognise this road I’m on which i know was built a year ago. Hardly up to date

I guess it’s not Audi’s fault, but I got to say the nav in the a6 is pretty rubbish.

My 2010 Mondeo (2007 technology) had a far better screen and nav system than the Audi.

Rest of the car is ace tho so they are forgiven

I have a 2016 A6 with the SD card mapping. It got me hopelessly lost for a while down at Glasgow at the weekend - on newish road layouts around the M8/M73. While I have grown to like the Audi navigation (my 2011 A6 had the hard drive version) - there is no way I am paying £250+ for an updated map for a single year. Because of this I think Audi will not sell hardly any, and I would rather and probably will buy a garmin with free lifetime updates and use this on the very limited amount of times I need bang up to date maps.
Also trying to enter destination by voice is cumbersome I find with many confirmations required which need you to look at screen - which defeats the purpose of voice.

On my 2011 - I did the MMI updates and updated the maps myself - the MMI updates were simple (for me anyway - as long as you know you have the correct ones) - but the map updates were tricky.
If only Audi offered a map update service at a reasonable price - for me it should really be included in the price of the car (most good sat nav suppliers now give free lifetime map updates) and I don't understand why major manufacturers don't tie in with Garmin/Tom Tom/Google to provide the navigation with free map updates.

I have looked around - and for SD card models - there is no other way but going through Audi - or getting a stand alone unit.

I agree with the above poster - I also love the car.

If i understood correctly If you have a car with a sim card then its google maps that are used.
I was wondering the same thing if I could buy used SD card with maps, can it just be easily updated.
I did that on my 2011 A4 without any problems. Or are there such big differences in nav systems?

The mmi with SIM cards on the pre uses a hard drive to store the map info and will still need updated from Audi as the google maps is a light overlay on top of the maps with info like traffic.
On the facelift you can download new maps from the myaudi website for the first 3 years then you have to pay for updates.
On the rmc sd card systems the card needs to be activated to the car otherwise it doesn’t work. Suppose it stops people stealing/swapping the sdcard out a courtesy car or hire car.
Dodgy eBay cards if not activated properly will brick your unit. Not a cheap part to replace.
