So I noticed this morning that I have a squeaking nois coming from the rear right wheel. After driving around I can't see any sign of the brakes being seized and it doesn't slow down if I put the clutch down. So t does this mean I have a wheel bearing gone? The noise is almost a metallic squeak but reduces as I pick up speed. I put the car on a jack and couldn't get any movement from the wheel (handbrake was on). I've had bearings go before on my previous bora but that didn't really make any noise. If it is a bearing is it safe to drive until I can get to a garage? This is a vw touran tdi 2005.

Right rear callers are VERY prone to failure on the PQ35 platform (Golf 5,Touran etc) but also the rear wheel bearing magnetic rubberised ring which is for the ABS, rusts and starts to expand so it rubs on the ABS speed sensor and squeaks.

I had to do both rear calipers on my 2004 touran after it was 8 years old, also had to replace the rear hubs on a golf due to the sensor ring corrosion described by Crasher. Next thing you might find pop up is an ABS fault as the sensor tip gets rubbed away, I'm surprised you're car hasn't already had calipers at 13 years old!

To be fair I've had the car two years. I'll have to check all the invoices that came with it to see if it was done or not.

something worth checking is after driving the car down a section of road where you have not braked for several miles (dual carriageway or whatever), coast the car to a stop and see how hot the rear discs are, if they are warm then fair to say you have a dragging caliper.

I did check that I notice when I turn the squeak goes. When I Coast the car doesn't slow down and the calipers, disks and wheels are still cool. I was hoping with it going when I turn that it's just a bearing.

So I've checked again this morning. Travelled the length of the road (maybe 300-500m) coasting it didn't slow down. Callipers, disks, pads and hubs cool all around. I got my inspection camera into the wheel and I can see what looks like a scratch along the disk. The disks were replaced approx 3 weeks ago:

The only thing I've noticed near by is that the tarmac is melted near my car:

At first I thought it was oil but it was the tarmac... Should this be safe to drive at 30 over short distances for now?

something else worth checking is the disc splash plates, as these get rotten and crumble away and bits can catch and scrape on the disc, or you might have a small stone stuck against the disc. lucky you getting melted tarmac - must be summer!!!

Erm... I got myself a torch and crawled around each wheel... I found this sticking out from behind the brake disk just touching the wheel rim...

    Just about here....

I removed it and squeaking gone. I can't see any sign of it coming from the present brake pad so can only assume its found its way in their from a previous replacement??

Surprised that whoever has recently changed the pads / discs didn't spot that, at least you found it!
