Hi all, new member hoping someone can help, I have just replaced the timing chain and tensioner on my sons golf 1.4tsi 2010. I checked the timing when all built back up but when I start up there is a metallic ticking noise a bit like a diesel sound can anybody help with what could be causing it, many thanks

Did you use the crank locking pin, cam locking plate and set number 1 piston at TDC using a dial gauge?

Hi crasher thanks for your reply, yes I set it to Tdc using Dti and inserted the camshaft setting tool, I wasn’t aware of a crankshaft locking tool tho, where does this go to lock the crankshaft?
I think I have found the problem, while looking in the box where I stored all the parts I found a small tube, I wondered where it came from as I did not take it off, however after trawling through pages of forums and drawings I finally found that it goes through the centre of the vvt sprocket. It must have fallen out without me noticing. So another strip down to replace it. I am interested to hear how to lock the crankshaft tho if you could tell me, cheers

Some have a bolt in the back of the block behind number 1’s first crank web which you take out and bolt in a locking pin. Yes leaving out the sleeve 03C 103 825 A (£3.24) would prevent the VVT unit from working.
