    Mk6 Golf 2.0TDI Match.

On the way to work yesterday the OH's motor conked out waiting at a junction 2 miles into the journey (10 mins or so, traffic).

Got it off the road, but could not get it to re-start.

I got there about 40 mins later, also tried to start it, no joy. Engine turned fine, but just won't actually start.

    No fault warnings on dash.

Got car recovered to garage who has looked at it today. Fault code was : Key Not Recognised (apparently).

Anyway, he tries to start car, it starts 1st go and is running perfectly! So not sure how to proceed re: ensure it doesn't happen again.

Hmmm, that's great. Car works but am concerned. Wouldn't be quite as hassle free in the middle of a 4 lane roundabout or on the motorway (as per OH's daily journey).

I could understand if it wouldn't start initially because of the key, but not mid journey after being on the road for 10 mins. Seems kinda dangerous.

1st time it's conked out so rock solid confidence knocked a bit

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

It its an immobiliser problem the warning light will be lit on the dash. There should be error codes logged. Does this garage have VAG-COM\VCDS or a generic scanner? I have 46 error codes for key.

Immo won't stall engine after it's been running for a while.
    I think that's a red hering.

Your issue is gonna be elsewhere. Get a proper fault code scan of the entire car as a first step (google: VCDS users map).

Hey Keithuk. Sry for delay, have been away for bank holiday.

There is no warning light on the dash corresponding to the immobiliser that I am aware of. There is no "yellow car/key symbol" on the instrument cluster on this model.
Also, car doesn't have the multifunction display/computer, rather a more basic LCD type display with only specific digits (upgraded computer was optional extra on this model at the time).

As such, I'm not sure what message I would see Just had a quick look through the manual with respect to the dash/imobiliser but there doesn't seem to be any mention of it.

Not sure, I decided that since he wasn't sure I wouldn't bother pressing the issue. He just said "Key Not Recognised".

Got car back, started 1st time and I've just done a few miles in it, no problems. Will swap to spare key, upgrade breakdown cover and see what happens.

    Thanks for response.

I will have a read up about it thanks for info. As above, got car back now, will see how it goes. If it happens again I'll find a place that's more VW specific and take it from there.

    Thanks again
