    Hello to all, I have recently bought a 2008 1.9 tdi b6 passat for my partner amd this is my first post here. It's done 140k but is in great shape and a joy to drive.
    I have a question regarding the gear box. My only slight disappointment is the fact that it's 5 speed. I was wondering if they did a 6 speed box at all for the 1.9 b6 if so does anyone know which gear box code it is as id be interested I chucking the 6 speed box on if I can acquire one for reasonable money.

    Thanks in advance

    Russ

    The boxes are broken down in the following way, Design, i.e. MQ250 which is shown on the parts system as a PR code, i.e. 0EJ and these come in 5 and 6 speed versions, the design dates right back to the type 35 Passat of 1988 where this box was called an 02A, becoming an 02J in later models.
    These MQ250 6 speed boxes are known as the 02S series whereas the 5 speed MQ250 is an 0A4 and there are further sub divisions such as 02SC and 02SD.
    The MOST important data is the three digit type code which is stamped into the box in a dot punch manner and is followed by a five numerical digit code which is the build date.

    Your car has a PR-G0C 5-speed manual transmission of the MQ250 design which is the (PR-0EJ) JCX code of the 0A4 series and with a BXE code engine, the car is a 2008 model year type 3C5 111. What you will be concerned with is finding a gearbox of a suitable code. This model was never offered with a 6 speed box so a little imagination and adaptation will be required. In most cases there are a couple of the cars ECU’s such as the engine and dash which will need to be told it is now 6 speed therefore you must make sure this is possible so you will need something like full and legal up to date VCDS and someone who knows what to do. The ideal transmission to do this conversion is the 02S series which is also of the MQ250 design like your current 0A4, this was used in the Golf 5 with the 02SC version and the Touran with the 02SD version of the 02S, I think the Touran 02SD would probably more suited than the 02SC.

    The 02SD Touran codes available are GQN, JCM, JWP, JYK, KVX and LKA with the 02SC Golf options being JCL, JWN, JYJ and KVW, these being used roughly from 2006 to 2010. Other codes I have found for the 02SD used in a Touran with that you MAY be able to consider are FYG, GQL and KWD, or possibly even the MAW and MFR used in the 2010 onwards 1.6 CRTDI models.

    Using a 2008 Touran as a guide, from a QUICK scan through the parts system ETKA, between your 5 speed Passat and a 2008 6 speed BXE engined Touran ETKA shows the following parts to be different;

    1) Gearbox upper mount 3C0 199 555 P MAY need to be changed to POSSIBLY 1K0 199 555 N

    2) The gear knob…

    That is all I can see from quite a good look through the two systems. The driveshaft’s are different between the two cars but the inner CV’s are the same so I don’t think you will have any trouble there either. It makes me wonder WHY this was not an option or even standard. Firstly, you MUST check that the relevant ECU’s can be re-coded.

    When dealing with a scarp yard or a private seller who knows what they are doing you will need to know the code dot STAMPED into the gear housing section of the transmission and NOT the raised cast in parts numbers of the case such as 0A4 301 103F on the gear housing ALTHOUGH the end case 02S 301 211 F being used on the codes you need is useful double check info BUT beware as it is also used on 02S's that are not suitable.

    To finally clarify, if I was doing this I would be looking for a GQN, JCM, JWP, JYK, KVX or LKA from a 2006>2010 Touran. A new LUK or Sachs clutch and DMF kit at the same time would be sensible.

    Having driven both, i prefer the 5 speed. Its also a more reliable box.

    I tend to agree with Rowdy having had a 6 speed in a 1.9 touran and 5 speed in 1.9 passat.

    Love the 'just chucking the 6 speed box on' bit!
