I think it should be compulsary that insurance companies pay out the amount insured for, if we under insure they reduce the payout by the percentage you have under insured.

How can it be fair that we buy a new or secondhand car then insure it for the full amount and they refuse to pay out?

I wrote my car off in January and they tried paying me the "book" value after 2 months of fighting them and using the insurance ombudsman I got the full dealer selling price and just bought a replacement from the VW dealer, I actually then negotiated £400 off the price so I actually made a profit of £200 after the excess was taken.

You have to pull you weight against them they have a contract to insure you fully comp and after taking legal advice I won it took just 9 letters and 8 weeks to gain an extra £3500.

I posted a few days ago about a good experience buying GAP insurance from a company. I mentioned to name and the moderator removed the link.

It may be removed again but ala co uk.

Surely the whole purpose of this forum is to exchange ideas and experience both good and bad. If we find a good supplier then sing their praises and share the information.

I have just bought return to invoice insurance. I did a lot of research and read all the terms and conditions and small print as the prices between different companies varied fairly significantly. I eventually decided on car2cover.co.uk as they offer the best cover and they were pleasant to deal with over the phone. I found the insurance cheaper elsewhere but the key difference is that most of the other copmanies do not cover theft with use of your keys. I decided it was worth paying the extra money so that theft with use of the keys is covered.

Car2cover have a price guarantee so if you find comparable cover elsewhere for cheaper they will beat that offer by £10. They would not beat the prices of companies that do not cover theft with keys, as they consider this to be a significant difference between the cover - however, they did offer me a discount of £12 when I phoned them up to discuss this. Overall I paid £218 for 4 years cover with a £10,000 limit - an extra expense but surely worth it if you have to use it.

The other company that offered similar cover was click4gap.co.uk but I eventually chose car2cover as I found their terms and conditions marginally better.

Just my thoughts - I hope this is useful to anyone considering and shopping around for return to invoice gap insurance!

I believe GAP insurance can be worth while, if you value the car higher than say the Glass Guide which a insurance company may value your vehicle with. All depends in relation to car value and if any finance is veing taken out etc...?
