    Hi All,

My turbo has started making a loud howling noise that can be heard just AFTER accelerating. I went on Youtube and found a clip of exactly the same sound that someone else had posted and this is it:

Mk5 golf tdi turbo howl - YouTube

A few months prior to this I did keep having a problem with an intercooler pipe popping off connecting to the intercooler itself but I fixed that but ever since Ive noticed that the turbo sounds like its whistling at idle more than it did before (when I say whistle its more like a quiet police siren noise which I believe is common) however I got the impression the turbo was now whirling a little at idle when previously it didn't (only on gentle acceleration).

One more thing to note is that the Emissions Workshop warning has come on a while back, I assumed it was caused by the clogging up of something when the intercooler pipe kept popping off as there was loads of black smoke kicking out of the back, however this warning came on at least a month before this sound started occurring.

I know what you're thinking: "I hope I never buy a car off this idiot" but I would just like some advice on what it is and what I need to do to soldier it through.

    Thanks
    W

your symptoms could be EGR or intake throttle flap (V157) related, you should get a diagnostic scan as a starting point. If the car has being going into limp mode that could point to turbo VNT sticking but emissions warning more likely to be EGR related, however turbo howling worst case scenario could be the turbo itself, rule out the cheaper stuff first though with a diagnostic scan.
