    Hello,

I have some failing lower control arms on my Audi a6 avant 2005 1.9 AWX engine.
it is the final edition model I think. I am wanting to purchase a kit to do the front end arms and ball joints so I ordered an online febi kit (21502) It arrived and six months later when I finally got around to stripping the car down I realised that the parts were not going to fit. The car is not going far until I get this sorted.
I believe that there are two sizes of ball joint a "20" and a "16"I am not 100% sure what they refer to but I know I bought the wrong kit! The old genuine parts do not have any useful identifying numbers hence my post.
I have uploaded some photographs showing old items and incorrect ones. I ideally want a kit to sort the front end out. One of the new ball joints is too wide to fit and the other is
missing some sort of collar on the bottom of it?!
Can anyone suggest the correct part sizes/numbers or link me to a kit? The febi one seemed the most reasonably priced one for a know brand.....
    Thanks

The Febi is the best value kit, TRW, Lemforder and Meyle kits are also top quality. Kits with a full fastener set make life SO much easier for the “chap on his back” when he does not have a massive selection of VAG fasteners in the stores.

    Hi
Yes the kit looked great but there was no way it was going to fit. Can you see in the photos the difference? The company have been very good so i have sent it back.
The other kit is the 24902 but I am just not sure.
My car is a later model 2005.

With it being a very late 4B obviously it has the later set up. Febi describe the strut pickup link arm (4B3 407 151 K) as being the 21mm cone and the guide arm (8E0 407 693 and 694 AG) as 22mm. There are three levels of the Febi kit, 26600 (£322, in stock) without ARB links or track rod ends, 21500 (£354, in stock) with ends and 21502 (£380, no stock) with ends and ARB links, so..... why does your 21502 not fit?

Measure the old ball joint at the top of the taper near the threads to find the right size, I thought mine were going to be 20mm but found they were actually the 16mm. luckily I did lots of research and cross referencing and purchased the correct ones initially.

Also make sure you are putting the arm in the right way, it's an easy mistake to make, the front arm with the taper goes downwards into the knuckle not upwards - which will not fit, also make sure you use the hardened flange nut when securing it and not the temp nyloc that is supplied to hold the plastic protective cover on while in transit.

The rear arm goes upwards like a conventional ball joint setup.

Leave all the bolts loose, jack the suspension up from the bottom of the knuckle so the car's in the natural ride position (under load) before you tighten any of the main securing bolts otherwise you may damage the rubber bushes as they stretch, you don't need to remove the sway bar or engine cover (just the one rear bolt on the cover to get to the rear arm main bolt), it saves a lot of time. Again tighten the sway bar links in the jacked up position to avoid stress on them when lowered.

Make sure you have two 16mm ring spanners, and two 18mm, preferably with one offset ring 18mm as you need to reach inside the chassis to get to the nut, a socket and ratchet won't do it.

Also get some WD40 penetrating oil for the dreaded double top ball joint pinch bolt, both of mine were seized and I had to drill one out, it was tightened so much it was like a banana, luckily I managed to drill through it without damaging the knuckle but it took about two hours, you will need a suitable m10 hardened flat punch to knock them out if they are corroded in.

    Good luck!

If you look at the second and third pictures that I posted it shows the old arm against the new one. The ball joint ends are quite different on both of them. One was just far too wide to slot down as its is much thicker than the original (picture 3) and the other one looks too thin (picture 2) unless I am being really stupid.
Luckily I left one side alone and took pictures as a reference so I could reassemble.

Yes this may make sense if you look at the pictures I posted my ball joint (top of taper) is smaller than the one I bought. I can measure them but I am assuming that I bought 20mm and need 16mm. Where do I find a kit with 16mm!!
    Is that the febi 24902?
