This is what is happening to my MK5 1.4 TSi 170hp. I will say now that everything I have changed and done on it has been done from advice by people on FB forums and mechanics.

A little while ago, the fans were starting as soon as I turned my key, got told it was a CTS, so changed that, only to realise later, that there were two of them, so managed to finally get to the second one and changed that too. The fans stopped doing all that, but then they weren't coming on at all, so was told that maybe one or both of the CTS's were faulty because of where I got them from. (Apparently this company doesn't have a great rep for getting parts). Then I was also advised that maybe it was a thermostat, again I found out that there were two, so after being given the wrong ones (Again by that company), I managed to get the correct ones from GSF.

In among all this, a warning kept coming up saying STOP!! Check coolant. Use owners manual. When looking in the reservoir, bottle would be empty and when I opened the cap, coolant would come bubbling back and loads of steam. After letting car cool down, would start engine and there would be bubbles. A mechanic told me to look for a bleed valve, but couldn't find one, so he said there was an airlock and to take it to him and he would sort it out. He said that he did, but the air coming into the cabin would only be warm if got over 2000 rpm, and go cold under that.

Got car back after he abandoned it in a field for some unknown reason, and again was advised by somebody else to flush the system which I did following instructions on many youtube vids. Put in some steel seal with new coolant and kept engine running until bubbles cleared. Drove car this morning, and it runs great, heaters in cabin are good BUT Coolant level has gone down until I open the reservoir cap again and then it comes gushing up again. No smoke out the exhaust, and no leaks evident on dry cardboard I laid under car.

    Any ideas anyone?

Has anyone mentioned about the waterpump to you? I suspect that the impeller has become detached from the shaft and you have no water flow, that would explain the overheating symptoms your having.

No, nobody has mentioned that, but probably because I have said to them that the dealer I bought it off, assured us that it was done in February

Yes sound like the water pump. Drive my car for a month with Gallons of water ready. When she regurgitates water usually at a stop or resting chances are it’s the water pump
