So my Audi A4 B5 Avant has just had £15.00 worth of super unleaded petrol put in it, the problem is, it is diesel. The needle was nearly in the red when I filled up. I only drove the mile and a half back to my home, but what type of damage will this do? does it need to be syphoned out?

My mum as a petrol and I fill her car so got muddle for once.

    Thanks.

I have done this a number of times in my Golf GT TDi 130 1.9 PD. It will not be a big problem. Fill the tank full with diesel and keep topping it up to dilute.
The fuel pump is lubricated with the diesel so if any damage is caused it will be to the fuel pump.
I enquired about having it drained out and AA, RAC ect wanted over £200 to do this as it is not covered under breakdown. From my experience you will be fine.
My golf had 147,000 miles and still on the same fuel pump.

Get a garage or miss-fuelling specialist to clean it out as soon as possible to avoid damage to seals not designed for petrol.

I have read around and that answer is coming up a lot, hopefully it will be ok. Think it was £1.28 a litre so I put about 11 litres in or so, not sure the tank capacity, but about a third.

I've also seen how much it cost, it was particularly annoying since it passed it's MOT with no problems today

Car's got about 208,000 miles on it, runs perfectly, or it did.

Might see if eBay sells syphons.

The longer you leave petrol in there the more the seals will swell, get it purged and running again ASAP.

    Update.

I managed to syphon off nearly 11 litres. Put some deisel back in, other than a smokey and smelly exhuast on starting it has been fine; infact, it might be my imagination but it seems to be running better. Time will out for any long term problems.

So don't panick if you do the same.

Quite often after doing this job, people comment the car feels more lively.
