I toyed with the idea of strapping a phone under there to see if i could see what was happening. I still haven't ruled it out

I think FrenchAudi is on the same track as me, either something that has been inspected previously, has been mis-diagnosed as ok, or you really need the car over an inspection pit and somebody replicating the issue with a second somebody thoroughly inspecting from below.
I personally would try to do this before laying out the cost of new struts, which could potentially be an expensive waste of money and time.
    Good luck

ps, thats also a good call on the fitting and locking in, of certain bushes, ie, bottom links, antiroll bar etc, when not weight loaded sufficiently

I've pretty much run out of things to look at that are visible. There's nothing that's been undone or replaced that hasn't been checked for torque and there's no movement in any of the older control arms.
All control arms were torqued under load.
The worse it gets the more it sounds and feels like the struts (or the strut on that side) and they aren't that expensive so they may as well get done anyway. If it isn't them it rules them out and I then have fresh suspension all round (the garage told me my back end, that's the car not me, was a bit bouncy about three years ago so it's not a big deal to replace them all).
It's being looked at by the garage on Saturday and if it isn't the struts then I can send them back since they haven't even been shipped yet so I suspect they won't arrive before then.

Well I dropped the car off at the garage and they phoned me five minutes later to tell me that another customer has driven into it.
I swear this car is cursed

I also had a jinxed car from Neckarsum - a Ro80 - collected new from the factory in 1968.

I was rear-ended on the M1 a week after we bought it. The other driver was still unconscious weeks later, it wasn't his car, and the UK agents for the German insurance co., wouldn't do anything until they found who insured it. So three insurance companies were involved, one of them unknown, and no-one would do anything.

I took it back to Neckarsulm, on the grounds that they were the agents for the German insurance co., where they reluctantly arranged the repair, but the garage which repaired it backed it into a wall on the day we collected it a few weeks later.

He pinched a replacement boot lid from a customer's car, so we drove away, but soon realised it was a bodge. The door seals whistled, the steering was weird, and it behaved strangely on corners. By now I had taken out UK insurance, so asked them for help regarding the hidden faults from the previous repairs. Now four insurance companies.

Took it to the AA for a report, but on the way back was rear ended in Manchester! Now five insurance companies were involved.

The AA recommended having the body aligned on a jig. The insurances agreed to this, so it went to a specialist in Manchester.

Went to collect it some weeks later but someone had broken the key in the steering lock, which they had cut off, and were waiting for a new lock from Germany.

I eventually got it back, having had the use of it for only a couple of weeks in the year I had owned it, but it never felt the same again.

We used it for another 8 months, driving long distances between the UK, Spain, and Algeria. It looked great, but it wasn't the car it should have been, so I sold it to an American in Mallorca.

He hit a tree and wrote it off shortly afterwards. Definitely a jinxed car. I had two more, the last of which I rebuilt and now belongs to a collector in Japan.

OK you win on the cursed car front
Mine only has superficial damage but it is a pain.
Garage could find nothing wrong with it, all control arms and mountings are free of play. His best guess was also a bolt that hadn't been tightened properly. I mentioned the suspension struts and he said it was possible. It wasn't helped by the fact that all my messing about had got some grit behind the brake pads and that was making a noise as well to cover up the other noises!
I tightened absolutely everything on that side this morning (and cleaned the brakes) and the brake noise has gone but the clunking remains.
I'll put the new struts on when they arrive and I'll take it from there.

I need it to last another two years, then my daughter will be driving and we can share a car (something small and cheap!)
I love this car when it's working properly

Good luck then! Me, I'd wait until the fault becomes obvious.

If I bothered about all the odd grunts and rattles from my VW I'd go nuts
