    Hi All,
I have a VW caddy 2005 STI (Diesel) that just stopped starting all of a sudden, Drove fine parked van up in the drive next morning going to work just turned over. I noticed the Glow plug harness was showing damaged to it, so order up another one. The new harness was 4 wire and mine was 2 wire, Anyhow after doing a continuity test i found the 2 wire one the first wire was connected to 1&2 heat plug connectors and the other to 3-4. the 4 wire one all were connected to each glow plug connector individually so i joined 3-4 together and joined 1&2 together effectively making the same combination as the original loom. I then connected it up and still engine was just turning over as before. I then checked the voltage to the 2 original wires after disconnecting the loom again and was getting negative -12volts reading on meter on each pin while my red terminal of meter was on live terminal of battery when ignition on.

i then done some goolging and a few people mentioned the temperature switch sensor, I removed this got a reading of 2.04kohms and once in hot water the resistance fell greatly so I assume this is fine? I then read the connecting terminal with ignition in the on position and I got a reading of 5v which seems ok. All fuses are fine under bonnet and in the drivers side fusebox.

Running out of ideas any help would be much appreciated Thanks

The EGR system on these is very simple being vacuum operated like much earlier systems so check the wiring to the vacuum solenoid.

    Hi Crasher,
I checked the wiring to the vacuum solenoid and there is 12v going to it when ignition is switched on. I removed the vacuum solenoid and put compressed air through the smaller tube of the 3 and air came out the 2 larger tubes. I then applied 12v from bench supply and it done the same, all I here is a small click sound briefly when voltage is applied, I bought a reconditioned one which should be here in a few days, In the meantime I removed the fuel solenoid to see if fuel it getting up to the engine which is so I guess that eliminates the fuel pump? The fuel solenoid wiring showed 5v supply. is there a way to check the fuel solenoid itself? just trying to eliminate anything else while waiting on the vacuum solenoid to arrive. Somebody did say the car would still start if the vacuum was faulty or not?

thanks for your help...much appreciated solenoid was faulty or no

Update: I checked the voltage supply to the vacuum solenoid while connected and there is no voltage, when disconnected the voltage is 12v so looks like there is a short or a massive voltage drop on the vacuum solenoid?

On the chassis leg behind and below the left headlight there is a 14 pin black multi-plug in a plastic bracket, open this up and check for corrosion on the pins and damage to the wiring as this plug gives us all sorts of problem on PQ35 platform (Golf 5 etc) cars. The power feed to the EGR solenoid is at pin 5 on a tiny 0.5mm CSA black/red wire and these small gauge wires have been giving trouble on various circuits, the 0.35mm CSA type is even more fragile. If the wires or terminals are damaged, you can get proper VAG repair wires for both sides of this plug which you fit and solder in to the cut back damaged wire, ask your TPS for repair wires to plugs 1J0 973 737 and 1J0 973 837 in 0.5mm, gold plated ones work the best but it depends on what they have, they keep the common repair wires.
