Ive got a 2014 a6 avant ultra and when I removed my spare wheel from the boot the well was full of water, as you know the battery and control unit are in there so it’s a bit worrying, it also seems to be wet behind the passenger rear light access panel with the carpeting being wet inside.... anyone got any ideas what it could be?IMG_0027.JPGIMG_0028.JPGIMG_0029.JPGIMG_0030.JPGIMG_0031.JPGIMG_0032.JPGIMG_0033.JPGIMG_0034.JPG

Probably coming in from rear light cluster as it seems common for the seals to fail pretty early in some cars. There’s been a few people on here that’s had the same problem.

So had the car into Audi today for a diagnostic on the water ingress, turns out it’s the Towbar I had fitted by Jaques towbar services in York last year, they said the rear cross member bolts have not been put back in after the towbar has been fitted and had black tape stuck over others.... im so disappointed as the lad was spot on and I thought he’d done a really good job can anyone confirm that bolt was for the rear cross member it’s located in the left hand rear light accessIMG_0108.JPG and has anyone got any photos or diagrams of how it should look, I’m going to take the bumper back off and try and remedy the situation with new bolts etc but don’t know what to expect.... cheers n advance

Right, just had the bumper off and put bolts back in where the bumper bar was removed, put a bit silicone sealer under the washer just for good measure, hopefully problem solved.
Just gauging interest but I took a load of photos of the removal process and was wondering if it’s worth me writing a brief step by step instruction. I searched everywhere and could only find the process for a C6 not a C7 and they are different.

    AND THE SAGA CONTINUES....

Filled all holes with bolts and silicone and thought job was sorted, big mistake. After the rain last night I opened the boot to find the spare wheel well filled with water, again so got in car and had the wife spray water on the tailgate and the water is seeping out through the black silicone stuff under the tailgate, god knows what this is and even less what it’s used for (see pic), it’s also coming in from behind the black boot lock solenoid?? At least that’s what I think it is, anybody got any ideas????

Pete, you car is avant isn't it?

Im only asking as I fitted my own towbar to my car so have seen the rear bumper off. Could it be that water is tracking along parking sensor cables or along the harness for your towbar?
Other than that take your rear lights out and see if you can see water marks going past the seals and into your boot.
It may be worth you dropping the bumper off, it takes around 15mins and is surprising easy to do. If you have a look on the PF Jones website you can download the towbar fitting guide for your car which includes all the bumper removal etc.

I think the black stuff is a coating to stop the spare wheel from rubbing against the bodywork. When I had a rear end shunt in my 2012 A6, the body panels in that area were distorted and some of the seams had split open. I'd be looking behind the bumper and crashbar at the seams where the panels of the rear boot floor join.

You can see the seams I mean in the damage pics below (taken from inside the boot)

On the outside, they should be covered by waterproof sealing tape. I'd be checking this to make sure it's intact after your towbar guy was under there.

    Cheers!
