    Hello all,

When you put the key into the ignition and turn it to stage / position one.... you'd expect to see the dashboard light-up and you'd hear a mechanical clunk (perhaps the steering lock releasing & the gear selector lock releasing on an Auto if you have your foot on the brake).
If it's a TDI; you'd then wait for the glow plug coil symbol to go out and you'd turn the key to stage / position 2 to start the engine.

If I try this with a USB charger plugged into the cigarette lighter on the centre console... I get absolutely nothing... no lights, no clunks.. nada!
I have to unplug the USB charger from the cigarette charger and then the ignition works perfectly.

The only device I use in the cigarette lighter is a USB charger for my phone (2.4 amps). Thoughts & troubleshooting so far:

    • This happens even when the battery is fully charged after a long motorway run (continued to happen just the same after I had a new battery fitted a while ago).
    • I have tried 4 different USB chargers (from different manufacturers - some decent brands)... even lower powered 1 amp versions - they all have the same effect of blocking ignition stage 1!
    • It happens even if nothing is plugged into the USB chargers (i.e. just the charger is in the cigarette socket without my phone plugged into the charger itself).
    • Yes... I could just unplug it every time (which is what I currently do) but its a ball ache!

Does anybody have any thoughts about what could be causing this / how to fix it? Perhaps an EMI suppressor on the cigarette socket's wiring?

I do have a Heath Robinson approach in reserve: Wire up a sub-miniature relay to the "P" symbol LED on the gear selector... so that power is cut to the cigarette socket (or a hard-wired 12v to 5v supply) whenever the car is in Park (I rarely need to charge my phone whilst the car is stationary - I could have a hidden override switch to overcome this drawback).

    Al.

    Hi,

Yes the charger can be plugged into the cigarette lighter and used straight away after the engine has started.

    It's bizarre isn't it!
