I bought a MK5 Golf FSI 1.6 a couple of weeks ago and have noticed that the temperature gauge needle never moves from the bottom. I assumed that it’d be the Coolant Temp Sensor that was faulty, so I bought one, and fitted it, but it hasn’t seemed to have solved the problem.

I’ve also noticed that the coolant level has been dropping very slowly over the past two weeks. I’ve checked the oil, and there doesn’t seem to be any sign of water in it, so I’m fairly sure there isn’t a problem with the head gasket, I’m just wondering where to look next. The engine does get hot, as the heaters blow hot air out, so I’m not sure it’s a problem with the thermostat either. Any pointers would be appreciated!

You need some diagnostic work with a full car scan and some observations of measuring block data in the engine and instruments addresses to view the temperature senders signals. A simple output test would show if the gauge needle moves as it should. The Golf 5 is VERY prone to leaking on the radiators left lower corner.

I have a Snap On Solus diagnostic computer I’m pretty sure I can get live data from that. I’ll get that plugged in when I can and see if I can get some readings. I have noticed a small wet patch on the ground near the left hand side of the radiator which appears overnight, so I’ll check that out also. Thanks a lot
