my parking brake just doesnt come on at all on its own, turning off the engine, opening the door or even on locking the car, if it isnt applied manually it wont come on full stop.

Exactly the same - however my parking brake has just failed and so will let you know if this changes with the new one fitted

I’m sure I got it to come on automatically by opening the door with the car in drive and foot on the brake ( can’t remember if I’d undone the seatbelt too). Not really a practical solution though
