I am about to put the fourth fuel pump in my MK3 Golf (1.4 ABD Engine) in its 24 year history.

I pulled the last two failed pumps apart and found that tiny particles of something had jammed the impellers in both cases, but particles of what I couldn't say but I'd put a new canister filter on each time I put a new pump on?

It's got me guessing as the tank is plastic as I think are the fuel lines and I try not to run too low on petrol, the only thing I have doubts about is the system by which the tank is vented via a valve and a carbon filter and wonder if this is where the bits are coming from, and I'm not talking about a lot just one or two is all it takes to jam a pump?

Puzzled !!! any ideas or a similar experience welcomed.

The Golf 3 fuel tank is a fully sealed unit, I have just fitted one in a Golf 2 because it is bigger but used an early VR6 4 Bar pump as I need it as a high volume pre stage pump for the main high pressure pump to the fuel rail. There are breather hoses clamped on with steel crimp clamps and these can rust causing pipes to come off. We had the pump fail on a left hand drive recent ish Spanish import 1.8 the other day, and this uses the same 1.2 Bar unit, 1H0 919 651 N, and in this case it melted the fuse whilst on the MOT lane and conked out, very inconvenient! This pump is available from many companies, some good and some not so... What are you fitting? The pump case has a tea strainer filter so large lumps should not get into it, are these deposits black and about the same size as sugar granules?
