    hello fellas!
so here we go, earlier today was driving up the by-pass and then all of a sudden the car makes a small jolt, throws the traction control light on, the glow plug system light and oil pressure light. the rev gauge was going haywire like it had a mind of its own, the steering went heavy and had no throttle response. so I pulled over switched the old girl off and first thing I checked was the timing belt and aux belt, both present and no signs of damage at all, no oil leaks either. so I went for the restart and everything was fine, no warning, steering was perfect and good throttle response. so I set off down the road again, about a mile down the road it happens again but this time the glow plug light flickered on and the abs light came on, no oil pressure light but the rev gauge was still playing up, switched it off while cruising and went for the rolling restart and been fine since. any help or somewhere to start checking would be much appreciated.

If it affected the steering weight it has to be something to do with the front pulley arrangement and suggestions of a charging problem would point to the alternator locking up or the belt tensioner failing due to a locked up alternator one way clutch.

thank you for the reply Crasher. if it was the alternator, would it be possible that its back feeding and its that what's sending the rev gauge haywire?

I can’t check the wiring diagram at home but we have had some odd responses to low batteries recently. Modern starter motors are capable of cranking over on what is really a flat battery but the battery can’t support the ECU.

With all the recent wet weather and VAGs inability to make watertight cars i would also check for water ingress. Check foot wells and under the scuttle panel.
