Hi I hope some one can help me shed some light on a problem Im having. Im not very experienced at car maintanance so please go easy.

I have an Audi A4 B7 Avant and have a ticking coming from passengers side of the dash. It occurs when ever I press the circulation button on or off or use the windscreen jet washer. It clicks quite slowly 10-15 times then stops. It also clicks if I turn the heating/cooling system to off.
I recently had the pollen filter changed during a service so checked to make sure there was nothing blocking the flap there. After inspection The flap under the pollen filter opens and closes as expected but the noise seems to be coming from right under the pollen filter housing and the noise starts right after the flap opens or closes. I also gives the odd random single click every 15-20 mins for reasons completely unknown!!
I hope someone can help me diagnosis what this could be as I am keen to fix it myself and save another garage bill.

    Cheers

Sounds like a flap motor is stuck.
You can use VCDS to reset flaps with basic settings

    Thanks kite,

When you say the motor is stuck..... Does that mean it's not physically blocked if it can be released using VCDS?

The motors get stuck, the clicking noise is the worm drive gear sticking.
There is a thread in the b6 section that describes opening the motor and lubricating the gear.

Temperature flap motor is a common failure; it strips its gears and then starts clicking as the ECU is constantly trying to move it. You need to know which one of the three per side is faulty by a code read and a typical code would be

01841 Potentiometer in V158 (G220) Adaption limit exceeded

which means the left flap motor V158 needs to be replaced, G220 is the potentiometer in the flap the feeds back the position The V158 can be replaced after removing the glove box, it is the one with a yellow operating lever

Another common code would be for the V113 motor and this has a light blue lever and again means removing the glove box and sometimes it is the V107 defrost flap (light green) and means drivers under dash panel out.

A new left side temp flap for a right hand drive car is listed in the ETKA parts system as 8E2 820 511 F (£145.57) and described as V158 brown which contradicts the ELSA manual which says it is the V159 which is brown. Anyway, firstly a fault code read. After installation a new motor MUST be calibrated in Basic Settings using a suitable diagnostic computer or the gears can strip on the new one and TPS would refer you to Audi and they are wise to this mistake.
