I have a 2014 A6 Ultra S-Line S-Tronic. The rotary knob in the centre console for controlling the MMI has failed. From the symptoms it seems that it is actually a 3-position switch and one of the three positions has failed. If I rotate the knob the selection on the MMI screen alternates between two options (i.e. it moves up one then down one). Turning the knob slowly I can see that the cursor moves on the first click but stays put on the next click, moves on the next click and so on.

I can't see any evidence online that this has happened to anyone else. If there is a quick and easy fix that would be good to hear. But I guess the only way to fix this is to replace the MMI control unit in the centre console. It is obviously going to be cheaper if I do this myself with a second hand unit rather than get an Audi dealer to fix it. I have seen someone selling second hand units claiming that they need to be programmed for the vehicle. Is this true? If so, what needs to be done? How difficult is it? Is it something I can do with a laptop and an appropriate cable?

    Thanks for any advice.

Have you spilt anything on the mmi? Worth removing and stripping it down so you can clean the contacts with some electrical cleaner. A used unit does not need coding to your car. Even the later versions work with the 1st gen mmi systems

Haven't spilt anything recently! But will take a look at stripping down the existing unit. Thanks for the quick response.

Hi. I have a 65 plate and the knob started to get notchy and stick down Audi at first lubricated it with a light oil, lasted about 9 months then started again. Audi then replaced the whole unit under warenty the first fix was at the direction of Audi as a known issue and resolution. Hav a try spraying WD40 or switch cleaner down the switch shaft, it may help for a while.
