I have been given a 2002 VW Polo (9n 1.2l 12v) as a first car, it has some problems though which I am trying to diagnose and fix. This is not only my first car to own but my first car to try to fix! I have done a bunch of research because I have basically no background on this and would be very grateful if someone could help.

First of all, the power steering is bad. In reverse it does not work at all (the car also stalls very very easily in reverse). The rest of the time it sometimes works, otherwise its heavy but drivable. When the engine is running, the power steering warning light (on the instrument cluster) is not on and after about 10 minutes of the engine running the yellow power steering light comes on.

Before the power steering warning light coming on, you can hear a constant whirring sound. This whirring sound coincides with the lights flickering (if you put on the headlights or the reading light, or even the dash backlights). When I put my hand on the steering wheel and slightly tug it to one side when the engine is running, I can also feel the steering wheel try to pull and this coincides with the whirring sound and the electric lights flickering. The engine also has moments when it feels as though it is about to stall.

When the power steering light comes on after a few minutes of the engine running, the whirring sounds stops and the flickering in the lights stops as well. The tugging at the steering wheel stops as well. The steering is heavy but not undrivable, only very very heavy when in reverse. The yellow power steering light comes and stays on till the engine is restarted.

When I put my hand on the steering wheel and slightly tug it to one side when the engine is running, I can also feel the steering wheel try to pull and this coincides with the whirring sound and the electric lights flickering.

I think what is happening is that something has gone wrong in the power steering system, it is drawing too much current (i think the power steering in this car is electrohydraulic) and this is causing the lights to flicker and the motor to idle badly as well as not have power steering.

My research so far has told me that I either have a bad power steering sensor or some cables which are shorting.
    What do you guys think?
