    Hi.
I have just been told that my steering rack is shot... (plastic internals worn)
The car is a 2006 TT 3.2 with only 52,000 on the clock with 8 stamps from Audi and 3 stamps from indis.
I contacted my local Audi dealers to ask about any warranty on the rack ( mileage wise) and was told no as it been to indi garages so not a complete service history with Audi.
I think a steering rack to only last 52,000 is quite a poor do for an Audi.
just wondering what you guys think.
    Thanks for any help/ advice.
    Graham.

Hi, could you be more specific at why its shot? Plastic internals? Could it not just be worn track rods (as opposed to the T.R.Ends)?

    Hi Alan.
It rattles, clunks on uneven ground and it does sound like lower ball joints, track rod ends or anti roll bar bushes etc.
All the above have been checked and found to be ok.
The steering rack internals have plastic coggs that wear over time. I have had a chat with a specialist steering rack company at length who re work the internals using all metal coggs on the MK2 TT 8 J racks. Audi would charge £4000 to replace says the mech who checked my TT out.
I understand its 12 year old, but with only 52,000miles with this fault is poor from Audi.
8 from the 11 service stamps are from Audi dealers who now dont want to know as i havent spent much money with them End Quote....

We fit ZF Lenkrad units which come through Bosch now as they have bought that part of the ZF business. These fit and code up perfectly without any worry and cost a fraction of the VAG cost. You will need to use the Gen2 to Gen3 conversion harness which still has to be bought genuine as far as I know.

What sort of cost for the zf racks. I would still need the gen3 loom and coding.
I still think the steering rack should last longer than 52,000 miles tho.
The reworked gen2 rack will prop be cheaper because i wont need the loom and coding.

It will still have to be set up to the car. I must admit that wear of these so called EPAS racks is rare. If you message me your VIN I can can find out the typical cost.

Talking to one of my customers this morning he reminded me that his 2010 60K mile TTRS has a steering knock which months ago we previously diagnosed as being play in the column unit lower coupling but back at home hundreds of miles away it recently got MUCH worse and nearly sheared off. He had a local garage bodge it up until he can get it to me for a new part which only comes as the complete column assembly.

    Hi Crasher.
    Thanks for all your info.
I have decided to buy the reworked metal gears gen2 rack £295 and get mine swapped out and returned.
Your last post, I will ask the garage to check this out when replacing the rack.
