    Hey guys

Thanks for checking out my thread. I need to replace the clutch (slipping) in my 2003 passat TDI (engine AWX gearbox FHN) and have noticed the gear shifter moving as I accelerate/decelerate (worst in second).

I had a test drive with my local gearbox specialist and he said that it indicated some thing loose in the gearbox, and that the gearbox would need to be stripped and components replaced to fix it. I'm always cautious believing people who want to sell me a service so I thought I'd post the video on the VW forums to see if what I'm being told is true. The gearbox needs to come off to replace a couple of seals any way, the technician wants £240 (inc vat) + parts for stripping the gearbox and replacing parts.

Please check out the video and let me know what you think:

    Cheers!

Not being blunt, but find another transmission specialist. He would appear to be either an idiot or a chancer..

That’s the gearbox moving. Not the shifter. Mine does it, every other passat I’ve been in does it. My B5 Audi does it. Have a look at your gearbox and engine mounts if it really bothers you that much fella.

It’s just the gearbox pushing the shift linkages back as it moves. Longtitudinal gearbox Car’s, something has to move somewhere or you would have solid mounts.

    Aidan.

    Thanks again Aidan!

I did get a bad feeling with that specialist... It's probably BS he uses on every one who comes in. The moving shifter doesn't bother me so I won't bother getting the gearbox stripped down while it's off.

    Cheers!

I’ve had the equivalent GGB go mate, big time, and if something’s loose I. There (mine let go of its input shaft) you’ll know. You’ll hear it above all else. I’ve had mine on and off about 6 times now I think lol.

Happy to help mate, unless anybody else has any other suggestions. I’m not gonna pretend to be the be all end all expert.

    Aidan
