Would this cause any issues with the fuel system (air etc)?
Not a great idea for several reasons. Unless you disconnect the injector loom the car will try to fire, and may run for a short amount of time drawing air (as you have suggested) into the fuel lines, emptying the filter and subsequently drawing air into the tandem pump which in turn will shove it into the head and injectors. A lot of air in a fuel system is not a good thing. Testing it in situ with an alternative power source is also a no no as it's fuel and explosive.

Remove from the tank (keeping everything around the hole very clean - do the cleaning before you start and be very thorough do not drop or let anything fall into the tank) then test it elsewhere with a limited, controlled amount of fuel.

You could insert a T piece into the fuel line with a restrictor in the pipe going to your container.
Enough fuel would then go to the filter/ tandem pump to avoid any air getting in.
Should then get a small but continuous flow into you container while the tank pump runs.

I hate threads that don't conclude with the results, so here is a follow up!

I ended up connecting VCDS and using that to try and run the pump (engine control module>basic settings> 035). When I did this, there was no noise at all from the pump. To check, I did put a hose onto the outlet and then used VCDS to run the pump - no engine cranking so no issue with air. Again nothing, so was pretty sure it was the pump.

It's taken ages to get the part - ended up cancelling my order, and getting it from ebay. Just fitted it and the car runs so it looks like this was the issue!

Thanks for the help on this one!

Good result - I am just about to attempt a refurb on my old pump - heat gun and plastic trim removal tools at the ready. Found the right motor for £20. Just a little 'see-if-I-can' type project.
