    Hi everyone,

    I have a 2006 A6 Avant 3.0TDi tiptronic, with a BMK engine code.

I'm due to replace my subframe bushes, as they're well past it. To do this I was going to use an engine support bar to remove the subframe from the bottom, fairly straightforward. I have the bushes on order and they're arriving in about a month.

My BMK has never had its chains and tensioners done, except for the top right one which fixed the "death rattle" on startup. I do get a little chain noise on startup every now and then, which goes away after about 2-3 seconds, once the tensioners pressurise. However I figured that since I'm doing the subframe bushes, maybe I just make one big job of it and do chains, tensioners and subframe bushes all at once. I will be in a time position to do this in the middle of the year, so I'm planning.

    So first question:
    1. I would plan to remove the engine and gearbox all as one unit. If I wasn't doing the subframe I was on the fence about leaving the box in there, but with the subframe I think it's easier to get the entire lot out. To that end, do I leave the engine and gearbox connected to the sub and pull all 3 out together? Or so I detach engine and gearbox from the sub, pull them out, then pull the sub?

Then, on the chains, tensioners and guides:
    1. The sprockets... do I have to change them? My car is on 181k km, 113k miles. The febi kit says to "check sprockets for wear!". How much wear is too much? I see second hand sprockets being sold on ebay, and I look at them looking for wear, which I can't really see. I know it would be better to look and an old and new one side by side, but I wouldn't have this when I did the job unless I bought a new one... even then, how much is too much?
    2. And if you do recommend replacing the sprockets, they're rather expensive... Could I get away with say, not doing the one that drives the oil pump? Or perhaps only the two big ones show wear usually? Or maybe only the one on the crank?
    3. Maybe a silly question, but do I have to drain the oil from my engine? The audi steps say yes, but then again it often says small things which aren't really required. Is the oil level in the sump higher than the base of the chains cover?
    4. There is a seal, 079 109 139 A, which is on the parts diagram. Do I need to replace this seal? (number 7 on this diagram) camshaft timing chain; slide rail Audi A6/Avant (A6) 2006 year Audi SOUTH AFRICA 109070

Then whilst I have the whole lot out, should I look to do anything else? My gearbox and TC has been rebuilt before, so that can just go back in. I'll clean all the spots of the engine bay I usually can't get to, etc.

    Thanks for all your replies.

Anyone? Even if just the subframe removal/non-subframe removal question? i.e. can I remove the engine and box leaving the subframe in? Or do I rather remove the engine/sub/box all together?

If you take the front end off you could lift out the engine with a hoist.

    Hey Dan,

Thanks for the reply. That's the plan. I should have clarified that I don't have a lift so I don't plan to drop it out the bottom, rather pulling the engine and box out the front. So you're saying that the engine and gearbox will clear the subframe fine if coming out the front?

    Thanks
