Reduce oil???

I am really surprised by some posts. It is not like this that suddenly the car starts producing oil! The excess oil comes from dilution by diesel fuel due to the unfinished DPF burning process. It could happened in the cars with many short run distances when the whole DPF process could not fully complete. The dealer should immediately change the oil instead of draining the excess of it.

OP You could take a sample of oil and get it tested. I used to have a Land Rover discovery sport diesel and there is a design flaw with the DPF setup which meant lots of people suffered from oil dilution (see that forum, it’s painful story), despite the claimed 2 yrs / 20k service intervals. I got rid of mine before it became a problem.

I would suggest to replace it since the oil must be diluted by diesel fuel. If you do so many short runs, take your car once a month on a highway run of 50 miles with CA 2200 RPM. It doesn't have to be fast, you can change to manual to keep the needed RPM. This should clean the DPF.
That's the "beauty" of being an owner of the car with DPF.

Do you know a reliable way to tell when an active regen cycle is happening, or even better a way to force one? Only way I can think of whilst driving is via stop/start being disabled but then that requires stopping!

Normal DPF regeneration cycle is happening automatically and unfortunately in our cars is not signalised in any way. As I know, to automatically start the process the certain condition must be met as longer drive, engine and oil temperature, etc. Probably you have noticed that sometimes after a drive even in the cold weather when you turn off the ignition the engine cooling fans are still working with the full speed for even 15 minutes. It means that you turned off the engine during the DPF regeneration process when the software increased the engine and exhaust gas temperature (by adding extra fuel) to burn out the car's catalyst. When the DPF is fully blocked (what in not a good information) the icon appears on VC informing that the car started the forced, emergency DPF cleaning cycle. When it starts you have to continue driving keeping the certain conditions by the moment when the icon disappear. If it does't disappear it means the problem with DPF and visit at dealership.
There is also an emergency procedure to regenerate blocked DPF which is used by the dealership. They can run this procedure when the car is at standstill and connected to the service computer. It is long and not always successful process. This procedure is also available in VCP but I never had a need to use it.
When you have a lot of short runs when often the engine is even not able to achieve the normal working temperature, the best solution is to make from time to time longer drive with 2000-2300RPM.
My wife had A5 3.0TDI with almost only short runs of 5-10km. So, from time to time I was taking her car for longer drive to clean the DPF. Finally, I had enough of these forced journeys and decided to buy her a new A5 with petrol engine .


PS. I always change the oil every year or every 15k km (10k miles) despite of fact that the car has LL, 2 years interval. This extra oil change I do in independent service to avoid Audi doubled prices for such an operation.

Thanks for the info retom. The only way to detect a regen is in progress during use is either start/stop not working when otherwise it would, or reduced fuel economy for no other good reason. Can’t see why a little green light would have been too difficult. Oh well.
