    If you suspect it is the pulley clutch that is slipping or jammed solid you should test it by removing the belt and locking the alternator rotor then seeing if the pulley locks in the usual direction of rotation and free wheels in the reverse direction, look on youtube for vids. If it locks in both directions it is knackered, you also need a tool like this to remove the pulley if you intend to swap or renew it.

    What was wrong with the old one,was it just the brushes,regulator??,does it give out any voltage,a humming alt is not good,sounds like its complete crap.
    A4 B6,A4B7Quattro,MK4 Golf,MK5Golf gone and well forgotten,MK6Golf.

    the old one that was in the car was a valeo 140 amp one died out on me was not giving out any power to the battery at all what could of gone on it.

    this breakers yard messing me around sending me a faulty humming noise alternator then sent me a 120 amp when i told them i need a 140amp.

    are they easy to repair how do i test it??
