    1) Will the motor attempt to be driven when you run the "Potentiometer & Flap Alignment" option the 08 HVAC section in VCDS the motor regardless of the limits currently configured?

    2) Does anyone know if it's possible to buy the potentiometer "166 273H" in this picture?

    3) Full waffle....
Been battling this on and off over the last few winters so thought I'd record my efforts here. Just when it's needed most in the damp and cold the windscreen demist position for the blowers stops working. In the past based on other threads I've had the glovebox out a couple of times poked around and squirted some silicon spray on the flap arms. Usually though the problem has gone away by itself. I've got VCDS so I've run scans that sure enough say there's issues with the demist flap motor of one flavour or another. This years' was:

    Part No: 8E0 820 043 AC
    Component: A4 Klimaautomat 1219

    1 Fault Found:
    00710 - Defroster Flap Positioning Motor (V107)
41-00 - Blocked or No Voltage

For reference the only other thread I could find with this fault code was:
    A4 B6 Aircon / climate control problem

It was stuck at the bottom end "29" on the readings in VCDS. Thought I'd have another go at fettling with things today and had a play around with the options in VCDS to see what it could tell me aside from the fault codes. I ran the "Potentiometer & Flap Alignment" option and all the other motors whirred merrily and reset their limits but the defrost motor refused to budge and re-calibrated its upper and lower limits to basically where it was stuck at around "29".

This didn't feel like a massive success so thought I'd commit to at least removing the offending motor and set the green arm/linkages so the defroster flap was constantly open. I found this pretty good write up on having a go at cleaning the potentiometers so thought I'd give that a go:
DIY: HVAC flap motor potentiometer cleaning - Audi Forum - Audi Forums for the A4, S4, TT, A3, A6 and more!

Found that indeed the pot did have a dead spot around 600 Ohms and despite electrical cleaner and turning the pot between its limits the dead spot remained so I guess it really is a bit dead. Plugged the pot/motor assembly back in (without bothering to connect the arm) and thought I'd run the alignment just to see if the motor sprung to life and tried to moved at all. It didn't. I was thinking it should at least try and move the arm and I should at least get an error about the readings from the pot being wrong rather than the blocked message. Instead I was rewarded with a new "Adaptation Limit Surpassed" which made me wonder if my earlier go at running the "Potentiometer & Flap Alignment" had somehow set the limits such that it wasn't possible to recalibrate things any more, hence question (1) above or perhaps the motor really is jammed so I'll go try moving things manually and see if that frees it up.

    Any advice appreciated,
    cheers
    Ian

Seems like the answer to 1) above is yes. I tried wiggling the cog/worm gears and then when I refitted the motor is sprang back to life and reset the limits. Doubt I've fixed this permanently but it's all back to life again for the moment...

I think that does mean that the "blocked or no voltage" message meant that the motor was having a tired moment rather than anything to do with the dodgy potentiometer readings.

For reference the part codes on the 3 motors clustered together are
    8e2.820.511a - red arm
8e2.820.511b - defrost motor (green arm) - the one giving me hassle
    8e2.820.511c - black arm
