i had oil in my coolant bottle so i changed the oil cooler, flushed the system quite a few times. every day after doing my daily 70 mile trip i would remove the bottle and clean it. decided to leave it for 3 days without cleaning it and the coolant light came up again. checked the bottle and there was oil in it again. what else could it be, head gasket? ive got no other signs of a head gasket thats gone. no trouble starting it in the morning and definetly no oil getting into the engine at all. everything ive read up on the BMN engines with coolant and oil mixing is a failed oil cooler and alot of failures in the head cracking causing coolant loss but im gaining oil not loosing coolant.

This could be a head gasket issue, the BMN has been known to suffer cracking problems around the head gasket dowels which can cause oil to get into the cooling system, there is a VAG TPI about this issue.

Technical Product Information notice. The early head cracking issue you know of could be the port issue where water would get into the inlet ports overnight, the gasket dowel issue was different and did not require a new head or block, there is a procedure for repair with the head removed which I have at work, I don’t have ELSAwin at home now as I was getting stick for “working” at home so I can post the TPI on Monday if you remind me.

Where are you going to find a decent warranted low mileage BMN? The youngest is a decade old and they were rare in the first place.

I’ve just changed a failed BMN in an 08 Touran 170 and replaced it with a BMR and have exactly the same issue. Would the next step be a head gasket change?
