  1. Power Steering Issue, TC Light Persistent

    Hi guys,

I was on my way to work on Thursday and hit a patch of ice, took a little turn and ended up kerbing the drivers side wheel pretty hard.

Drive it home with no issue, drove it yesterday just fine, but today the traction control light is on persistently, the TC seems not to be an issue though (pulled out of an ice parky space earlier with no problem).

My power steering also seems to have gone, there's some response at speed, but if I'm pulling out at a junction, not even a sharp one, I'm having to full lock it and the steering seems slack, there is however no power steering warning light on.

The wheels are out of alignment but that's explainable, and to stay straight I need to have the wheel at 1 O'clock, which I guess is alignment.

I've run diagnostics and I'm getting:

    ABS
    Part #: 1K0907379AN
    Coding: 133B200D092800FCC81204EA901D00803000 (hex)
    Component: ESP MK60EC1
    Fault codes:
    00778 Steering Angle Sensor (G85)

    And,

    Power steering
    Part #: 1K0909144H
    Coding: [none]
    Component: EPS_ZFLS Kl. 67
    Fault codes:
    16353 Manufacturer-specific code
    16355 Manufacturer-specific code

The ones relating to power steering were there before and I've not been able to clear them, power steering was also fine.

I've managed to reset the ABS fault but it just comes back, worth noting is that there is no ABS or Power Steering warning light lit up, just the traction control light.

I've tried the whole 'full lock it either way, drive straight' to no avail.

I've also pulled and refitted the relevant fuses but no luck.

I've booked it in with a mechanic next week, but any idea what the potential causes are?
I've no real idea what I should be aware of and want avoid the 'you need a new steering rack' if I can.

There is no ABS warning light lit.

    Thanks in advance.

    *****Update*****
Given that the power steering light is not on, and the steering wheel spins back to me after cornering, I'm not convinced that power steering is an issue.

The TCS light is now intermittent and I'm guessing that as it's tied into the ABS ECU along with the Steering Angle Sensor it's just that particular sensor that's at fault.

Having to put extra turns on the steering wheel to get the drive wheels to move is probably just the faulty sensor failing to register the movement that I make.

    Fingers crossed 🤞

    Thanks for the input.

Any particular reason that you'd suggest a main dealer over other business for the alignment?

I'm likley taking it to my local tyre place tomorrow for a realignment in the hopes that I can re-calibrate the steering angle sensor with a drive.

Failing that, I'll see if someone local with a VAG-COM can reset the SAS.

My only other concern, however, is that whilst I'm getting 00778 Steering Angle Sensor (G85) under ABS, I'm also getting, under Steering angle '[ECU not present]'.

Maybe it's non-com due to the alignment being well outside of the tolerance for the sensor, or maybe there's a hard fault on the ECU which will be harder to deal with, or maybe the SAS is dead and just needs replacing? :S

With any luck the alignment sorts it and everything communicates again, if not, it'll go in to VW for diagnostics.

Reason Ive suggested Main Dealer because calibration has to be done through ECU, or go to Halfords.
