    Hi all
first winter in the Q7 e-tron and struggled today on medium steep incline on local untreated road. Annoyingly I made it up earlier this morning, but combination of ruts & melting snow/ ice was a problem. I probably could have made it but some idiot had parked/abandoned a car by the roadside and the last thing I wanted to do was slide into it.

Doubly annoying, my mate next door in his range rover went past me: plus my previous VW Phaeton never had a problem on this hill....

The real reason is probably the Goodyear Eagle F1 285/20/45 tyres

So, does anyone have a suggestion for a set of winter tyres (& wheels) and any reliable on-line supplier they have used. I suspect Germany has lots of these, but previous experience would be welcome. I will probably go with 18" or 19" wheels. I plan get a wheel & tyre set and swap each winter.

    Thanks!
Hugh in the snow covered Dublin & Wicklow hills

Got mine from mytyres. They have technical sheets for each of their suggest from the TUV certifying them. Got audialike wheels from MAM and Nokian tyres.

While the actual wheel is not precisely OEM size the tyre is. Look good and are not too expensive if they get dinged on a kerb to replace.

The 19” wheels and tyres cost around the same as 20” tyres without wheels. Because they extend the life of the summer tyres I view them as being expendable over the time I have the car as they cost no more than the Summer tyres and extend their life.

Incidentally winter tyres don’t like being taken off rims each year because they have softer tyre walls. I have had problems with this in the past and started getting dedicated winter wheels as a result.

I’ve got Nokian WR SUV 3 - 285/40 R21 109V XL TL very happy with them been brilliant in the snow both before Xmas and now. No hint of traction loss at all. I chose these as very limited choices for 21 inch rims though - in UK no all seasons available so I went for the summer/winter tyre swap route, as I quite like them still looking nice and big in winter :-)

Um that’s interesting what happened? I’ve got one set of rims and swapping tyres - first season with winters so not taken them off yet, bit concerning given the cost... :-(

OK, found them now. Tks! Mind if I ask how they worked for you?

I have asked for a shipping quote and if it's not stupid will be in touch. I used www.shiply.com to send alloys to a chap in UK before and it worked well.

To be fair never used them in real deep virgin snow, I didn't order that with my Q7 now I ve sold her its an open market lol. But in ice they left me with a lot more confidence see others struggle, when they gave up I sailed up the bank where I live. People get hung up on the cost, the £2.5K is one massive hit, but you only use one set of rubber at a time. So your summers last 4 years instead of 2, I know its common sense but the number of jaws drop when I pointed this out is laughable. Not to mention the ability to get around when others give up and protecting your investment. I feel like a salesman.

I picked up a genuine set from these guys last autumn. Had them on since December . They performed brilliantly in the Alps during a skiing holiday, didn't even need to get the snow chains out. Friend, who had summers on, relied on me as a taxi as his car was unusable without chains. Obviously a bonus in last weeks snow, but even without that they perform better in cold rain which is a normal UK winter.
