What I found was that if you kept swapping the winter tyres on and off the wheels eventually they didn’t seal as well and the tyre would loose pressure and would need frequent topping up of air. Has them back to the fitter and they managed to improve things but seal would loose pressure to the point you would need to top up air every four days or so.

If you are a high mileage driver and are only going to take them off and re fit once it won’t be a problem. If you are going to run them for three winters then you will need to keep an eye on the pressures.

For low mileage and keeping the winter tyres for a longer period I reckon winter rims are worth getting. Also there is a cost saving as it is cheaper to have a wheel fitted than a tyre refitted as well!

I chose these as very limited choices for 21 inch rims though - in UK no all seasons available so I went for the summer/winter tyre swap route, as I quite like them still looking nice and big in winter :-)

I'm in the same position as you. Nokian 285/40 R21 winter tyres to swap over. I've had winter tyres on an A6 swapped a few times without issue, so I'm hoping these will be the same. The compounds used aren't as soft as they used to be and with such a wide low profile tyre I'm hoping the side walls are pretty tough. Will certainly keep an eye on it though.

The difference in the cost of fitting will take an awful long time to pay for a spare set of rims. Kwik Fit, who were very good with mine, charge £11.50 per wheel for swapping a tyre, or £6.50 for swapping a wheel, so only £20 a time difference.

Good to know thanks. Mine are with ATS and costs are similar.

What pressure do you run them at? The fitter set mine on 40-42 versus the reference 38 (front, rear loaded). I dropped them back to the 38

I just read this up on the Nokian website, says set to +3 PSI above recommended so the fitter got it right then... Done in outside temps.
