We live in Sheffield, the city of seven hills. We previously had a Freelander that didn't put a foot wrong in the snow. We changed to a Q7 in the summer, really nice car but it is pants in the snow.
We are thinking of getting new wheels and snow tyres. The current rims are 21 inch.

Can anyone please advise us on the best rim diameter to purchase to improve traction.

Smaller the better (as long as they fit as sometimes you can only drop down an inch or two). Apart from being substantially cheaper per corner - the price for 20” tyres being much higher than say 19”s - having more weight over the surface area is no bad thing. Think snowshoes versus boots with the wider surface area being used to say above the snow rather than bite in - reduced surface area is good.

My wife has a Touareg with 21s. We fit snow tyres each year to all our cars and none have ever put a foot wrong. I’d never not fit them now.

Hi I live on the side of a mountain very step and windy hill for 1 mile. I converted to fitting winter tyres around 7 years ago as I got sick and tired of walking up and down when it snowed. I eventauly moved from 4x4 jeeps to an A6 Quattro around 4 years ago. My point being the A6 Quattro with winter tyres can handle that hill in any depth of snow up and down no problem. My first A6 had 18inch wheels. I changed to a C7 model 18 months back and I was worried as the wheels where 20 inch. But after some research I opted to buy 20 inch winter tyres as opposed to buying smaller winter wheel tyre combo. I have every bit as much grip on the 20's as I did on the 18's sometimes I think more grip. As a side note after going through a few different brands of winters I have settled on Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 the last 2 winters on 20's. I had the older version PA3 on 18's for 2 winters before that and I can't imagine anything beating them for grip in the frost snow and even the amazing grip offered in extreme wet.
Anyway that's my 2 pence worth lol I hope you get your Q7 grip sorted.

You won't believe how good winter wheels are in the snow. They're a lot better in the rain and cold too. I was in Germany for a few years & you can see why they're compulsory. Check your owners manual for the correct size you can fit. It's not dependant so much on diameter but the width. Normally the rims & tyres are narrower, which increases the force on the contact area making them cut into the snow better. You'll generally find they're a smaller diameter rim & a larger profile tyre.

Older cars used to have steel in the winter but a lot now have winter alloys, supposed to have thicker lacquer

You'll find plenty on eBay from Germany which is a good source of OM fit at good prices. They sell them after getting rid of their cars, quite a big market for them The other option is a dealer (expensive, very) or aftermarket new ones. I've had two sets of these with no problems. You will probably have adaptor rings for the hubs and a different set of bolts.

It is a no brainer to buy them, especially in Sheffield. I had new tyres on the rear & bags of sand in the boot of my MG midget when I lived there. I'd also look at Avon tyres, a lot cheaper than continental etc and made in the UK.
