Hi, I have a 2003 2.0TDI that has done just over 100K. Lately there is heavy black smoke coming out of the exhaust especially when you accelerate hard. When the engine is turning over normally it doesn't seem to be excessive. It is a bit embarrassing to leave a heavy plume of smoke in the rear view mirror so would like to fix this if possible. Hopefully not something that is normal because of the age, mileage and type of car. MOT is due in April. Any advice on possible causes would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A 2003 2L? They did not put the BGW and BHW into the 3B until November 2003 so 2004my. Anyway, it is usually the turbo outlet hose that splits and these are different between the 1.9 and 2.0, the 2L one is double the price.

Check the hose/pipe where it comes out of the turbo under the exhaust manifold and it may have a split, these often don't show without boost so we use compressed air. Sometimes the upper hose into the EGR valve/flap unit splits, there are three different 1.9's, the AVB 100PS and the AWX/AVF 130PS but the AVB one doesn't tend to split so I imagine yours will be an AWX/AVF so it is hose part number 3B0 145 828 G which is £134.62 from VW but this is available from many sources for much less, we sell the Febi Bilstein part for £48.50 including carriage.
