    Right so...

It does not happen every time but it has happened often enough over the past 2 weeks.

Whenever the car has been sat for more than 8-12 hours or if it is really cold outside when i go to turn the car on, it will not start as it should the engine will shake and it will sound rough as F!!! The engine light will be on and the rev counter just drops right down.... i have not left it on long enough to see too much as i just turn it off straight away.

I will turn off the car and try to restart and after a couple of attempts the car will start.. the engine light will be off and the engine sounds and drives as it should.

Today when putting petrol in i turned the car on and there was a slight vibration/judder nothing major and the engine light flashed on and off. Misfire?

    What could the problem be?

You need to get your motor scanned (preferably with VAG-COM\VCDS) for any error codes logged in the ecu and post them, that will save a lot of guessing.

The cheap generic scanners give bad results.

Yeah i am going to take it to somebody to look at on friday but was just posting on here incase.

I would like to add i have noticed something this morning.

So first thing after it has been left over night... i go to start the car and it will either not start or start but will sound rough and the rev counter will just drop and it will cut out... now before i would turn the car off and leave it a couple of seconds and go again and it would take me a fair bit of time before it would eventually start.

Well i have noticed if i start > turn off > then instantly turn the key again to start straight away before it fully turned off it will only take 1 or 2 trys and it will start?

If it has done a lot of miles and only had a couple of services then chain wear is becoming a major issue on the CAXA engine, it makes them sound awful at start up and then they jump and **** a valve.

Yeah i heard about the timing chain issue, it has 58k Miles and has been serviced regularly. You think there is a chance it could be that? It does sound good after the initial start up problem

It is something which would come up on a code scan as a G40 implausible signal error so a code read first. By regular servicing do you mean according to the interval every 2 years 18K miles?

If at the oil chnage it rattles really badly for a few seconds, this is a good warning sign. With the intervals it has been done at I would hope and expect it to not have chain wear.
