    Just a quick one,

Car wouldn't start at all, would turn over but just wouldn't catch and it would seem like it's about to start then make a fairly loud click and then stop.

At idle im getting about 13.5v across the battery, when i turn on all the blowers, heated seats etc I'm getting about 13.1v.

Fully charged the battery overnight and after a couple of attempts starting the car it started and I ran it for about 10 mins, tested maybe a minute after running and the battery was at 11.6v.

Any other further tests I need to do to locate the issue or is it just the alternator?

    Thanks in advance!

Just another thing to add, did get a little bit of a burning smell the other day too but didn't think anything of it as I live very close to a steelworks so we get an odd smell now and then .

What was the voltage at your battery after charging it overnight? How old is it? Can you borrow a known good one to try? Have you checked the voltage at the alternator? Just trying to think of alternatives before you buy a new alternator which might not be the problem.

I use a cheap digital voltmeter that plugs into the cigar lighter, and that usually shows about 14 V when running, same on my old MG.

I would have thought anything liable to cause burning would have blown a fuse first.

Hi, the battery was at around 12.6v after charging it over night, it is a Halfords advance battery, I've had it about a year and it does have a 4 year guarantee so I could exchange it if it turns out to be that.

I haven't checked the voltage at the alternator, I am not sure how to go about that because it seems very restricted for space.

12.6v if fully charged, from a 1-year-old battery is not very good, the 8-yr-old one on my MG usually shows over 13. Can you leave it for a few days to see if it holds that?

I recently bought a new Varta battery online for my Passat, within a couple of months it started losing its charge after a few days, and finally started dropping to 10.6v, which suggested it had dropped a cell.

After a few emails where the supplier suggested I might not have maintained it correctly they sent a replacement, so being new doesn't guarantee they're going to be ok.

Search online for something like 'how to check an alternator' - easier than me trying to explain it (and I'mnot familiar with the CR engine layout)

12.6V is pretty well fully charged for a good battery. If you check the battery voltage immediately after charger is removed then voltage will be over this figure ( say 13.4V). left for an hour or so, then the voltage will go down to 12.6/12.7V. The alternator output should be at least 14.4V at 2000rpm with all electrical consumers on (not sure about heated seats !). Maybe a starter problem.
