As above, I lock the car and if I leave the roof down when I reach into the car the hazard lights start flashing rapidly but the alarm does not sound, the following fault codes are present, would a failed siren cause these or would it be the other way around, the faults are stopping the alarm from sounding? Also there appear to be lights in the drivers door alarm switch but if I try pressing the switches the lights in don't come on?

If it's the siren at fault am I wasting my money buying a second hand one given the issue is likely to be failed internal batteries? I would really appreciate any advice.

I could be very wrong, but I'd start by looking at the wiring loom going from the A pillar into the drivers door. Inside the loom is 4 fat wires and 4 thin wires, from my experience, 155k miles car, 2002 model, 3 fat wires and 1 thin wire was broken, I was getting all sorts off issues, with locking, alarm, windows door mirrors, eventually I gave in and replaced this wiring loom,

It was not cheap, about £130 from memory, but solved most of my issues.

Like you say, any second hand alarm will likely already have a flat battery which needs replacing. Unless you are desperate to make your alarm work, on an older car now, I'd be hesitant to spend too much money on a new siren.

Waste of money buying a secondhand one the batteries leak acid, very common problem with these units, clear out the fault codes and check with vcds it'll give you the last four alarm triggers(can't remember the block number)you will set off the alarm by reaching in that's normal,on a car that old I wouldn't bother unless its going off in the middle of the night.

It's not going off at all sound wise let alone in the middle of the night, I just don't like having things that should work but don't, not sure whether you'd call it OCD but it just bugs the hell out of me.

If you've got a bad one the acid migrates along the wires and connector requiring a new connector splicing in.

Well I've discovered that the alarm switches on the drivers door do work as do all the other switches on the drivers door so I'll take a punt that it's the actual siren in the boot and order one up and replace it when I'm of next week.
