HI....having terrible trouble diagnosing this fault. When the ignition is on, the slow fans run, and the Engine management light stays on. The fans go off again when ignition is off. The water temp is fine, and heating works great. My mechanic put the diagnostic do da on it, and it shows up as having a problem with the thermostat....even though it appears to function normally. can anyone help with this one? MOT is due. suspecting that there is a sensor inside the stat, but can't change that.

I changed my thermostat recently and it was a purely mechanical device, ie. no electrical connections, just like they have been for years. A faulty one wouldn't come up on a diagnostics test. I would start with looking at the coolant temperature sender or the temperature sensor in the rad. What your mechanic is saying sounds complete rubbish to me.

Hi Herby, No, there is...I changed the whole coolant housing myself twice over the years, as it is 17 yrs old. I have the 1.6 8v AKL auto model, which is different from yours I'm guessing. A diagnostic points to a faulty stat, but the water temp is fine, at 90 degs, and heating is all ok. please see pic. I'm wondering if they are using a thermistor in there instead of a rad sensor.

This is the sensor on the stat housing itself

This is a pic of the whole coolant housing including the green coolant sensor

Looking down the pipe something runs from the socket to the back of the stat (This is a spare one I have)

Apologies, never seen one like that before. Does the stat error come back after having cleared all the codes, just to be sure it is a current code?

Firstly i wouldnt worry about the engine light for the MOT.....isn't it only a advisory?
Why not change the housing and sensor then?

yes, the fault light does come back every time....I didn't want to go down the changing route until I was sure that this was the problem. I haven't come across anyone on the forums that seem to had this problem before, and it's bugging me.
