    hi all,

I might be buying a 2010 VW passat CC with the 2.0 tsi engine.56k miles. Also posted in CC section - but that looks unused so will ask the question here as believe same engine applies, so may as well.

I am aware that this falls into the year range of the Chain Tensioner issue.

I've looked through the forum here and others, but had some specific questions which I hope someone can clarify...

    1. I believe this engine is the EA888 Engine is that right?

    2. Is this definitely a problem that all engines of this year will be effected by?

    3. Assuming this falls within the affected year - would I be sorted and out of the danger zone if I were to buy the car and just get the tensioner replaced with a recent updated one - does this solve the issue for sure or could failure still occur with updated part (i believe latest issued one is 2012?)

    4. Anything else I should look out for?

I guess the key reason I am posting here is question 3 - i've read through but I don't seen to have a conclusive answer to this...

    Hi

I thought that is EA888 - or are you after something else?

Having looked further online it the base is EA888 and code maybe CCTA.

    Does that have an influence?

Any help much appreciate, as i am likely to view tomorrow.

    Hi all.... any guidance appreciated...

I rang a few VAG indies, some said they wouldn't even do the preventative change of the tensioner (to big of a job), two of them quoted +£1000 - 1200. Does that sound right?

Is this period of TSI engine just best avoided?

2.0t TSI Engine Common Problems to Look out for on VW and Audi's - Deutsche Auto Parts

Have a read of the above. The water pump and timing chain issues are the most worrying. High pressure fuel pump issues really affect must vw engines that use the pump. You need to find out the engine code. It is on the passenger side door frame label and sometimes found on the engine itself.

    Thanks, useful site.

So yes tensioner is an is an issue for car I’m looking at. Is this enough to say avoid the car and look at something else? I know forums often highlight hr bad, but this issue looks big?

do I avoid an otherwise good car?

Avoid it, general rule of thumb, any car that has issues with components that can potential destroy an engine are too risky. The 2010+ cars are much better. I'd say get a diesel but get a newer year. I mean it's not even about mileage. As long as it has full dealership history, one owner and is in mint condition and the car itself doesn't have severe factory faults, it's okay. There are tons of cars on auto trader that's 200K+ and in amazing condition, full dealership history and one owner. On auto trader the Mercedes are the most impressive, it seems they are hugely more reliable than bmw and VW. 2010-14 models with 300K+ mileage.

We only do about 4500 5000 miles a year and bit of town driving. Wouldn’t diesel be worst for me?
