Over the past week itís been around freezing overnight and I have noticed a very strange issue with my car.

It starts on the turn of the key, ticks over like normal, and you can rev it with the clutch in once warm to the redline without any issues. However the issue is under load, usually when cold. I drive off the estate slowly and once on the main road I accelerate to 60mph, not quickly just standard driving. I then receive a strong shake and judder, like I have changed from 1st to 5th gear and itís about to cut out. I can drive through this, then a knocking sound appears from the engine. It again is only under load and seems to quieten once the car is fully up to temperature.

    So in summary,

It judders, knocks and uses extra fuel

I donít get any smoke, there are no codes registered and there is plenty of oil.

One thing I have noticed is, this is sometimes when I am on less than 50 miles on the obc left before filling up.

Engine type? If it is a diesel the in tank fuel pumps often fail and cause starvation.
Dark was that day when Diesel conceived his grim engine that begot you, vile invention, more vicious, more criminal than the camera even, metallic monstrosity, bale and bane of our culture, chief woe of our Commonweal. How dare the Law prohibit hashish and heroin yet license your use, who inflate all weak inferior egos? Their addicts only do harm to their own lives: you poison the lungs of the innocent, your din dithers the peaceful, and on choked roads hundreds must daily die by chance-medley. Nimble technicians, surely you should hang your heads in shame. Your wit works mighty wonders, has landed men on the Moon, replaced brains by computers, and can smithy a "smart" bomb. It is a crying scandal that you cannot take the time or be bothered to build us, what sanity knows we need, an odorless and noiseless staid little electric brougham.

Itís a 2011 61 2.0 tdi 140, has 170k and never had any issues with it before.

Do you need the specific engine model? If so where do I find it?

So what you are saying is it is a seven year old car with 170K miles on it and because it has never gone wrong before you don't understand why it has?

Has the emissions recall been done?

What are you using to read the fault codes?

Sorry I need to add context..

AA used some scanner connected to the obd port while it was idling and moving. Cylinder 1 and 4 were minus numbers, 2 was 1.4 or 1.04 and 3 was 0.8

AA said to run a tank of super diesel through it and see what happens. He suggested poor fuel, my comment on here about not having any issues was related to itís always had standard fuel, mainly from supermarkets in it, and I havenít had any other engine work done, so the car is totally standard.

To answer your question, it has had the emissions ecu update and has been ok for 12k miles.

The injectors on the CRTDI 2L can go wrong but they are not as unreliable as the 1.6. Before changing them, their signals would need to be carefully studied because at £438 each you would not want to get it wrong.
