Where have I come from....well excluding non VAG cars, I started with an 02 plate 1.8T A4 sport, then I bought a 59 plate 2.0T S-Line A4 Avant. Both were bought from about 6 months old. The first had its problems, particularly a reoccurring engine fault. The avant, well a lovely looking car but what a pile of §***. Every time it went into the garage I would be over a £1000 lighter.

I gave up on the avant and replaced it with a 14 plate E350 AMG Sport estate 3 years ago. My wife has fallen in love with it so I hardly get to drive it these days.

Whilst I owned the avant, I bought a 96 plate Audi V6 cabriolet. We’ve had it 5 years and it still puts a smile on my face. Best car I’ve ever owned and although I don’t put too many miles on it, when I do, it’s driven like an everyday runaround. The problem is with 23 years of wear and tear, thing are eventually
    starting to need attention.

I’m starting to weigh up my options. I could either spend out on it’s needs or I’m thinking about the Golf R cabriolet.

I have my slight reservations based on the issues with my previous Audi’s so what do I need to know about a 14/15 plate cabriolet?

    Thanks

The manual box clutch can be weak if you want to remap it.

Probably not. I’ll be happy with the current performance.

Be wary of ones that have been re-mapped (many have), not all maps are well executed.

Are there any general engine issues? I’m guessing they had the same oil consumption issue as the 2011-13 TFSI Audi’s?

Occasionally but more chain related due to abuse of the already stupid longlife service intervals.

Interesting. I had the chain issue on mine a year before I started suffering the oil issues. It was like a double wammy

The engines lubrication is THE single most important point in its ability to function. Regulatory environmental concerns have stripped oil of its protection abilities due to the potential for catalyst damage (at the expense of engine damage) as the engine consumes its oil and at the same time fleet operators have demanded a doubling of change intervals, uncomfortable bedfellows, whereby we have ended up in a situation where the protection of oil is reduced and its expectations doubled. It does not take an expert to work out that is not going to work out in the real world, human nature being what it is intervals will be pushed and when those intervals have been pushed themselves....

So is it best to have the car serviced more regularly??

I’m guessing the consequences are severe if the engine isn’t checked regularity.

At the risk of sounding rude, I'm not being though, the answer to both those questions is pretty obvious, the oil is the engines blood but it wears out and gets dirty so needs changing regularly. We are now seeing recommendations on the VAG service system to drop the long life interval as I saw when doing an Audi digital service schedule the other day, screen shot below. They aren't shouting about it too loudly but gradually trying to sweeping longlife under the carpet bit by bit in case people start wagging fingers. BMW are going through the same hell with timing chains.
