    Hello All,

I have just paid £50 as a deposit for a 2011 Audi A6 and will be travelling 280 miles tomorrow to collect it. The car was advertised on ebay with mileage as 117000. I have just done a search on the MOT and HPI and there seems to be a discrepancy as follows:

    MOT 2014 Mileage recorded: 118,889
    MOT 2015 Mileage recorded: 69613

The mileage has increased in the following years. Does this mean the mileage has been clocked? is there any other way to verify this? I have spoken to the seller who says when he purchased it 3 years ago and looked into the mileage a few weeks later he could not get hold of the pervious seller. The service history book doesn't show any discrepancy. I have read of MOT stations accidently typing the incorrect mileage but can not be with such a big difference.

Where do I stand with this?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Probably clocked, I sold an A4 with 170 k on the clock, six years later that had gone down to 98k. There are plenty of rogues out there.

Thanks for the reply, I might as well ask for my deposit back, was wondering his reason for selling it at a lower price

But how come the MOT station that passed the test after the vehicle was clocked did not report it.

If it's a private its difficult to do anything, its a dealer I would flag it up to trading standards. Good luck.

Actually, I was wrong, went back into history and checked, sold it in June 2005 @ 172000. Then in July 2006, Mileage55,427 miles!

So really it has done 170K ish. Modern cars are astonishingly easy to clock, it can be done with a lap top and a cheap cable off of fleaBay in seconds whereas in the days before diagnostic ports it was MUCH more difficult giving the car a haircut especially cars such as the Golf 3 which had a digital speedo but no diagnostic link, it made them extreme difficult to do as only a select few people had the knowledge and there was no tinterweb to spread said knowledge and sell the tools.

There could be genuine discrepancies if the car had a new or second hand instrument cluster so not all out there are dodgy.
I do agree with everyone here though, I’ve seen cars get haircuts and it’s a cheap and quick job. What normally gets people caught is they only shave the instrument cluster.
Some modern cars have multiple recordings of the mileage. The gearbox, sat nav and maybe even the abs module can easily calculate mileage and like any computer it’s stored the information somewhere. Trick is find them all and see if they all match.
