Hi all, I've got a whirring noise coming from the aux belt area. Can't really hear it on idle but noise increases with accelerator. I'm guessing it's the belt tensioner. Does anyone know if these usually fail and how easy it is to replace? Car has done 66k.

Link below shows the tensioner. Bolt looks like it comes in from the rear of the tensioner but can see one on the front in the car.

More likely to be the AC compressor, on the Golf 6 they are very unreliable.

Hi, my compressor is denso but it's not the one with the 3 bolts that has the issues. The noise is there even when the ac is not on so would this make a difference?

Yes the Denso unit on the Golf 6 is the one we replace lots of, they are a constant drive unit without magnetic clutch. We had a lady in last month with a 2012 CAYC Golf 6 and she has been having nightmares with it. Over the last few months we have done one injector (which had been replaced before with what looked like a recon part) using a new VDO part, then a genuine VW high pressure fuel pump with full genuine timing belt setup and new Febi poly V belt with Febi tensioner, Febi alternator pulley, Midland Turbo turbo rebuild, genuine EGR valve and Sachs clutch/DMF plus a VW reflash update of the recall map using ODIS and eventually we managed to get it to idle smoothly and pull cleanly without sounding like a tractor. Then she came back with a front pulley noise which her husband was convinced was the new timing belt and it was the AC compressor so now that has been replaced with a new Denso unit as well and I have not seen her for a fortnight! It is not often I feel sorry for customers but they have been through the mill on a car they had only just bought from a relative....
