Last year my A4 failed its MOT for excessive emissions. The garage put some fuel treatment in the tank and then it passed OK. I occasionally notice grey smoke through the RV mirror, when accelerating hard, but doesn't always happen. Doesn't smoke when revving the engine at standstill. I have been using super diesel to see if that helps, but if anything, the problem has worsened. I did find some loose clips on the air intake pipe and tightened them up, but made little difference. The air filter is several thousand miles away from its next change - but then I do less then 3K per annum, all short trips. Could that be the problem? The oil consumption is less than 1 litre per annum, but a lot of that seems to end up on my drive. I did a scan with VAGCOM, but no fault codes registered. Current mileage 140K. The MOT tester offered to buy my car a couple of years ago and perhaps I should have let it go then, but I've had the car from new and quite like it as a runabout second car. Just waiting for the Govermnent to introduce their scrappage scheme and then it might go. In the meantime, is there anything I should be checking?

Intercooler pipe work thus boost leak and resulting rich mixture.

Like he said,.. theres 2 short hoses that are on the intercooler pipework that i have seen a fair few split. With a trained ear you can hear them with the left window open on acceleration. Sounds a bit like someone shaking a can of washers.

If it's not the above give the (warmed up) engine a good thrashing before the test. Lots of high revs to remove all the soot and debris.

Thanks for the replies, guys; much appreciated. I thought the pipework might be the culprit - still all original after 21 yrs! However, I will check the intercooler hoses, as suggested; last checked when I changed the coolant a couple of years ago. I also thought of checking the MAP sensor, as I understand this can get fouled up without setting a fault code. I've just recalled witnessing the smoke test during the car's second MOT, at a main dealer, at the turn of the century. When copious amounts of smoke appeared from the exhaust I was convinced this would result in a fail, but much to my surprise, it passed OK. Never had any further smoke problems until now. Perhaps I should also try the "good thrashing" remedy (aka Italian tune-up) suggested.

Some further info on the symptoms: If I do a getaway start from stationary (eg at traffic lights), there is no smoke. However, if I'm doing 30 and I put my foot down at the 50 sign, that's when the smoke appears whilst accelerating.
