Hi All, my new to me A6 S-line 16 plate has the worst navigation unit i've ever had in my life. It uses TMC for traffic reports (my last A6 used a sim card and was great) It has to go.

Does anyone have ideas of how to replace / update / just make it work nicely and usefully?

There must be aftermarket options somewhere? the option Audi offer is to upgrade maps, but the maps are fine, it goes from A to B without issue until there is an obstruction, it does nothing about it, no alternatives or other options.

My self standing TomTom does exactly what I need but I don't want to continue with a second unit in the windscreen, I want a way to use the Audi set up but with whatever is needed.

Please advise if you have any ideas

    Thank you

    Mike

Hi I have tech pack on a 2015FL with a sim slot between the 2 SD slots above the AC controls. Mine is the HDD version but not sure if the SD Nav version cars have a sim slot, think they should have. If you have the slot it's just a matter of setting it up on the MMI. Also think you can teather your Mobil to the car but not on mine to an iPhone. After that it's a good system with live traffic etc...

Thanks for the reply however your system and mine are totally different. Yours is a good one, I had that on a previous car but mine is garbage and I am trying to find an alternative to it, either adaption or replacement totally but i don't know where to go from here. There is little info on the web about it.
    Thanks again however.

Polite question: what exactly is wrong? Lack of re-routing, poor quality data, both of these?

TMC isn't the best traffic information channel - in fact, I think it is probably the worst - but it isn't that bad. Although the tech pack provides better traffic, that data still isn't brilliant, either (sadly, it is not "Google traffic" it is just better traffic data than TMC).

If you are frustrated by a lack of re-routing (and I assume you both have an option to be re-routed and have activated it), the Audi systems seem less inclined to re-route than other cars I have had, but then research has shown that you are better off staying on the primary route in 90% of traffic situations, anyway. My last MB only had TMC but was as eager to re-route as a cocker spaniel, but i often felt I would probably have been better off just staying on the original route.

I don't think there are a lot of options open to you, I am afraid. It seems that upgrading the nav to the tech pack is a major cost and much hassle. It might be easier (and I am not being flippant) to change the car.

Cheers Wildbore, thank you for your reply. If I could respond in reverse:-

Can't change the car as only had it a month or so. Had I realised how poor this system was at the time maybe my choice would be different.

Re-routing is not necessarily the issue but is part, I understand if it's not required then why re-route but currently i can be sat in a jam on the Motorway stationary for quite some time and it shows the arrival time at destination as the original time, nor does it even show i'm in heavy traffic. both TomTom and Waze do and alter times accordingly. But again I don't see why i should rely on something else nor do i want the TT in the windscreen.

My previous A6 did have the tech pack and was far more accurate with the additional sim card to get data.

Last week i was driving an A4 Avant on a 67 plate and the system in that car was constantly updating and making improvements.

I accept that the Audi system is what it is hence me seeing if there is a way to replace with aftermarket without altering the actual plastic work of the Audi.

Long shot, but how is your radio reception quality? Modern aerials are always amplified and, when the amplifier goes wonky, you often still get radio reception, but at a reduced level (unless it's completely kaput!). RDS-TMC requires a fully-working radio aerial.

The nav/mmi system in yours is the rmc version.
Cheapest option is you can get a mod so the rmc screen mirrors what’s on your smartphone through the ami cable but then you are gonna have to use the phone to control it and not the mmi buttons/knob.
Someone did this a while back.

The radio seems to be OK, most of the time i use DAB without issue apart from the regular digital drop out that everyone gets.

I think DAB and FM use different aerials in the car. How is your FM reception. TMC always used to be delivered over FM (via Classic FM) - but perhaps it comes over DAB, now; I don't know. I suggest a test of the FM reception, just to be sure.
