Big Red Oil Light Warning A4 TDI 1.9. 1999 V Reg.

Hi all.

Just been to collect my new (well 1999 V Reg) Audi A4 Tdi. It's been a company car and hardly been driven in the past 10 years. Anyway I drove it back from Bradford to Manchester, 30 or so miles) and when I got home and started her up again to go to shops I'm getting a big red oli can with drips from the display. When I press the button on the left, it says 'check engine oil' which I've done and seems fine. Once engine has run for a minute the light goes. Obviously I'm concerned as if it's the pressure I could have caused serious damage driving it. It's from a dealer so if it is a big problem I'll be back on to them.

The engine has done 75000 miles. Oil level is if anything too high so could this be problem? Engine is AVG.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

When I got my 180k 01 1.8t a4 it was the oil pump pickup tube that was blocked by the mesh. But that caused the cam chain to make noise. Never had the oil light

Engine sounds fine as far as I can tell. I've checked the history and looks like last time oil and filter were changed was 2013.

Is it a 1.8? They can suffer from poor oil pressure due to sludge blocking the pick up. I suggest you get it checked.

Hi. It's a 1.9 Turbo 110bhp. I've got it booked in next week. I spoke to mechanic and he seemed to think that if the light doesn't stay on, it should be OK, but he will check it out.

If it lights up for a moment when you turn the ignition on with the other lights then goes out before you start then yes he’s right.

It lights up, beeps, then I start engine and it stays on for ten seconds then goes out. It's booked in Friday, I guess I won't be driving it until then now, just in case.

Do you have access to a vag com scanner? If so I would scan it for codes. If not then best just drive to the garage as you suggest.

Unfortunately not! Are they available in shops, or just eBay etc?

Try the forums. There may be someone near you who can come over and scan it. Otherwise eBay for cable and download the software. If you like it pay Ross tech their £100 to register. Totally worth it for situations like this.
