WLAN allows you to connect devices in the car to the cars data service - so passengers can surf, get email etc. Useful because the antenna in the car is more powerful than a phone antenna so you may get better coverage in spotty reception areas.
It also means that devices that do not have a data SIM (WiFi only iPads, laptops etc.) can get access to data when in the car. There is a limit on the number of devices that can connect concurrently (5?, 8? Not sure) but should be plenty for most use cases.
I’ve taken advantage of the WLAN in my brothers A6 (in the US - where I am right now) to be able to moderate my use of the horribly expensive EE / T-mobile data add-on that I bought. It’s great, we get in the car and my iPhone flips from 3G to WiFi.
