We only do about 4k miles a year in our A4 3.0 V6 cab (2003), so have the oil and filter changed regulary. As its only in for a relatively short amount of use, is there any harm in using any 5w30 fully synthetic oil?

We were using Castrol Edge @ about £75 or £80 per change, is there much difference in using a cheaper oil @ £30 per change? Still 5w30 fully synthetic? Probably leaving myself open for a flaming here....

The cars getting on, few marks on her bodywork so just wanting another couple of years use out of her. She hasnt got any service history from 70k (now on 115k), and with her faults, wont have much resale value anyway when we get rid of her

Castrol used to make the Quantum oil but the bottle has changed and the oil is now supplied by Fuchs.
This is the older Castrol Quantum

Used Castrol Edge 5w30 in my V6 and it ran perfect with no cam wear. Join Costco, they usually have it on offer.

If only a spec was just a spec, it would make things so simple, we'd all then buy the cheapest of everything..

Some oil companies say their 504/507 oil is approved. It turns out that the approval is by given themselves ! VAG approval involves thorough testing procedures and is expensive ( tests paid by oil company). Check product labelling. I'm sure that in time the Chinese will have "approved" home brew 504/507 - would you take the chance ?
